Thinking About Renovating Your Kitchen?

At Bichelmeyer Renovations, we specialize in full-service kitchen remodels in the Kansas City area. We’ve guided hundreds of homeowners through this process with clarity, craftsmanship, and care. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the 4 key phases of a kitchen renovation so you know what to expect, from start to finish.

A gloved hand uses a claw hammer to break a white wall, creating a hole. The setting is neutral, focusing on demolition.

Phase 1: Demolition (Demo)

Every successful kitchen remodel starts with a clean slate. During demolition, we remove old cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring, and any other elements that are no longer serving the space. We do this strategically, preserving structural components, minimizing disruption, and keeping the site clean and safe.

Do you need to move out during a kitchen renovation? Not necessarily. In most cases, we provide a temporary kitchen setup so you can continue to prepare basic meals during construction.

Common tasks during demo:

  • Cabinet and countertop removal

  • Disconnecting and capping plumbing and electrical

  • Debris removal and site prep for the next phase

Phase 2: Rough-In

Worker in plaid shirt and cap on ladder installs drywall in a wooden-framed room, using a drill. Focused and concentrated expression.

The rough-in phase is all about infrastructure. This is where your new kitchen layout starts to take shape behind the walls. We install or reroute plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems to fit the updated floor plan.

This phase often includes:

  • New plumbing lines for sinks, dishwashers, or pot fillers

  • Rewiring for lighting, outlets, and appliance locations

  • HVAC adjustments for proper ventilation

Once rough-in work is completed, everything is inspected to meet building codes and ensure long-term functionality.

Phase 3: Drywall Installation

Unfinished room with drywall installation, visible seams, and cutouts for electrical outlets. Gray walls and concrete floor.

With rough-in inspections approved, we close up the walls. Drywall is installed, taped, and finished to create a smooth, clean surface. This is often the first point where the kitchen starts to feel like a finished space again.

What happens during drywall?

  • Wall framing adjustments, if needed

  • Drywall hanging and mudding

  • Sanding for a seamless, paint-ready surface

Drywall is a messy but essential step and a clear sign of progress.

Phase 4: Finishing Touches

Modern kitchen with wood details, pendant lights, and stainless steel appliances. Open view to living area with TV and white sofa. Bright, airy mood.

This is the part of the remodel most homeowners look forward to: the finishing phase. Here’s where your design vision comes to life.

We carefully install all the visible elements, including:

  • Custom cabinetry and hardware

  • Countertops (after templating and fabrication)

  • Tile backsplashes and flooring

  • Lighting fixtures and appliances

  • Final paint and touch-ups

Attention to detail is everything here. We make sure every line, surface, and material is finished to the highest standards.

Final Walkthrough & Client Sign-Off

Once all finishing work is complete, we walk through the space with you to review every detail. If any adjustments or touch-ups are needed, we take care of them promptly. Our goal is to leave you with a kitchen that not only looks beautiful, but functions beautifully too.
